SAND ALPINE

Summer, sun, skiing fun! In August 1956, a pensioner dropped onto a pile of quartz sand from the Upper Palatinate on boards, and began an exaggeration. Sandski’s pioneer, Hans Dobmeyer, remembers the night descents and salad oil in the ski jump.

Olympic Games in Hirschau: back then, ski stars like Barbi Henneberger (left) and Anneliese Meckel used to be on Mount Kaolino in summer (here in June 1959) to train for the Winter Olympics, among other things.
Colorful decoration: one year after the official foundation of SC Monte Kaolino, the Hirschauer celebrated the inauguration of the sand ski slope on August 25, 1957.
And jump! The Hirschauer were proud of their ski jump, but then, according to Dobmeyer, they dismantled it “after some strange falls.” However, there were no really serious accidents.
Improvised elevator: this first chairlift on Monte Kaolino was originally a shovel that was used in kaolin mining. It had to be replaced shortly after it was converted; the influx of visitors was too large.
