AUDI SNOWBOARD SERIE
In mid-November, the season of the Audi Snowboard Series was launched by the freestyle event on the Glacier 3000. The wait for the next event, the night Giant Slalom in Flumserberg, we want to shorten a bit. That’s why we feel the pulse of the people involved and take a look at the 2018/19 season in four episodes that appear on Friday. The start was made by the Chief Snowboard and Ski Freestyle, Snowboard and Telemark Director at Swiss-Ski, Sacha Giger. Today, David Hürzeler, Project Manager Freestyle Events, provides information about his expectations for the upcoming season.
The number of participants increased by about 28% last year to 2,572 participants. How can you explain this positive boost?
David Hürzeler: There are several reasons for this.
- First, the regional snowboard teams are getting better organized and bring new kids to the competitions every year.
- Secondly, the Audi Snowboard Series has been around since 2010 and has made a name for itself at home and abroad.
- And third, thanks to the snowy last winter, we only had to cancel a few days of competition. But the rising numbers of participants are a fact and are a good sign, on the one hand for the product Audi Snowboard Series, on the other hand, especially for the sport of snowboarding.
With various World Cup successes and podium finishes and the gold medal of Nevin Galmarini, the interest in the sport has risen again and this in all disciplines. Did the Audi Snowboard Series and you notice something of this growing interest?
Yes, I think such successes as Olympia Gold 2018 from Nevin or even four years earlier from Iouri Podladtchikov have a big impact on the entire youth movement. I was particularly pleased that both Nevin and Iouri were back on the Audi Snowboard Series shortly after their Olympic victories, sharing their gold medals with the thrilling kids.
The Audi Snowboard Series is not only popular with Swiss athletes, but also with the teams in Europe. How can you explain that?
The logo of the Audi Snowboard Series is like a quality label: drivers from abroad know what to expect. Here you will find excellent infrastructures, smooth organization, functioning safety precautions and rescue procedures as well as valuable prizes from our sponsors and the Snowboard Connection (brand association of the snowboard industry in Switzerland).
As a project leader, you have to deal with all the stakeholders of the scene. What are the core tasks of the tour for you and what are the biggest challenges for you?
I am in constant contact with the participants, parents, coaches, stations, sponsors, partner companies and the media. The focus is always on people. My main task is, above all, to combine all the requirements and demands of the above-mentioned stakeholders in the best possible way, together with my well-rehearsed and experienced team. Like a diplomat, but all with the same goal: The promotion of young snowboarders.
If you had to describe the Audi Snowboard Series in three words, what would they be?
Springboard, Platform, Benchmark.
Christmas is approaching and you have a wish for the Audi Snowboard Series 2018/19 free. What do you want?
I wish all participants injury-free, satisfying and positive experiences in the context of our tour.
Which highlights are waiting for us?
Lots! Undoubtedly a highlight are always the Swiss championships in all disciplines. In addition, the night finals in the Big Air and the halfpipe on the Bolgen in Davos should not be missed. As further highlights you can also look forward to the first snake run of our tour as well as the pre-YOG (Youth Olympic Games) event in Leysin.
You mentioned the pre-YOG event in Leysin. What are the tasks of the Audi Snowboard Series in this process?
Here we transfer know-how and build the station Leysin with people from the region sustainably as an event partner. Already last season we had the first event as part of our tour in Leysin, now is in January 2019 the main rehearsal for the games “Lausanne 2020” on the program. All persons in key functions of the local OC were trained in courses and events by Swiss-Ski and continue to gain experience at our events in the coming season. Conversely, we are of course glad for this energetic and competent support. In the meantime, this crew from Leysin is a well-rehearsed team and in this respect we do not need to worry about 2020 at all.
What do you want to give as a conclusion to the participants of the Audi Snowboard Series 2018/19?
The Audi Snowboard Series is your stage. Come here, use these and have fun together!
